Feminists. Man haters?

Feminism is a very unpopular word today. Feminism is a word that many people shy away from especially women because of what is associated with it today. This is a word I have noticed is being greatly misunderstood especially on social media. Feminists are viewed as “man haters” some people have even gone as far as creating parody accounts they are calling “menimists” and write what it appears many people consider “funny” posts with some that are appallingly sexist. A feminist from what I understand is someone who fights or believes in the equality of the sexes in all areas possible. Not above or below the male sex but equal to the so therefore they would not want to see men in a lesser position than women or vice versa. Emma Watson recently gave a very powerful speech to the UN regarding feminism (I recommend you to see). She pointed out many important things we need to know about feminism and also launched the He for She Champaign which is aimed at getting 100, 000 men and boys involved in the fight to achieve gender equality. In which many famous faces have taken part in. She says “For the record, feminism, by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. I started questioning gender-based assumptions a long time ago.”  But this is not what people see they think it’s all women wanting to be above men. This then again is not entirely their fault. A problem I have noticed among many feminists is to cry foul at literally anything these days and call is sexist even when it is not the case at all. For example when Mark Zuckerberg Facebook founder was accused of being sexist by wearing grey shirts and women have to dress up for work. In New York magazines Allison Davis in an essay titled “Zuckerberg Explains His Grey T-Shirts, Sounds Pretty Sexist” “Of Course, male CEOs are far too focused on changing the world  or building the next Big App to care about something as ‘silly’ or ‘frivolous’ as dressing professionally- they will just leave that to Marissa Mayer” Like really? Did we go there? If Mark finds fashion silly or frivolous I feel that has remotely nothing to do with women or being sexist, and that basically is the Silicon Valley dress code or he may have referring to Twitters Jack Dorsey and his Prada suits. Lena Dunham pointed this out and got bashed by many feminists but she was only speaking the truth. I quote “The minute feminism becomes hypercritical and humourless; it becomes too easy for the mainstream to dismiss our more valid complaints.” Because of the fear of being attacked many people are scared to come out and say they are feminist. Many resort to call themselves humanists, which in my opinion can only be achieved with equality among us. Basically I think it is important that people understand what feminism is before they attack it and also feminists again should not take advantage and cry foul at literally everything.

  1. Been looking for fellow young ladies that where willing to raise this issue. What bizarre says is right, feminists are not sexist. I considered myself a feminist simply because I want to be treated as an equal with the men. I don't want to be underestimated or looked down on just because I am female,NO SIR. I it's time we women stood up for what we believe in, EQUALITY.

    1. Yes. A problem I've noticed is people don't even understand this concept but the concept of misandry and assume thats what feminism is they need to educate themselves.
